Every year millions of people die in road accidents around the world. Some of these people do not survive even with minor injuries. But many times, despite terrible accidents, people miraculously not only survive, but also live their lives as before. One often gets to read about such miraculous incidents. Sometimes someone survives after falling from a multi-storey building, and sometimes someone survives even after falling under a train. One such miraculous but horrifying case has come to light in South Africa, where a 20-month-old daughter accidentally came under her own father’s truck. By the time he understood, it was too late. Not only this, a piece of the girl’s brain had also come out. But you will not believe what happened next. That girl not only survived, but is now living a normal life.
It is said that this accident happened on a farm in Coaster City, South Africa, when farmer father Shaun Steyn accidentally crushed his 20-month-old daughter Jana with his pickup truck, due to which the girl suffered severe head injuries. Shawn and his wife Kelly wasted no time in rushing the baby to the hospital, after which Jana spent several weeks in intensive care and underwent major surgery. Doctors have described his recovery as an extraordinary miracle. The girl’s mother Kelly said that after the accident the girl spent weeks in intensive care and then in a rehab center. Kelly said, “We had prepared ourselves for the possibility that she would never be the same. But with the help of doctors, she is exactly the same as she was before the accident.”
However, innocent Jana currently wears a protective helmet as doctors are waiting for her skull to heal completely. “She handles the helmet better than I expected, but I explain to her that she has to wear it to protect her head,” Kelly says. Let us tell you that on the day this accident happened, Shawn and his son Joshua had boarded the truck in the morning, while the innocent girl was getting ready inside the house with her. Meanwhile, the woman’s attention was diverted for a moment and the girl came behind the truck in the farm. During that time, Shawn was reversing the truck, when he felt that the vehicle was climbing over a stone. When he came out, he was shocked. He found his daughter under the truck.
Shawn said, “I didn’t think she was going to give birth because she was with Kelly. When I heard her cry I was as cold as ice.” “His head was bleeding and I could see a piece of his brain,” he said. The parents called Potchefstroom Hospital, 70 miles away. Paramedics treated Jana on the roadside and took her to the hospital. He was later airlifted to Johannesburg, where surgeons operated for four hours to remove the debris stuck between his skull and brain. After the operation, Jana was kept unconscious on the ventilator. “It was horrible to see my baby connected to tubes and wires,” Kelly said. But doctors did not find any serious trauma in the brain during the scan and she miraculously started recovering. Shawn says that this incident that happened in August 2024 has brought the family closer.
