Artisan Durga Rani Das, who arrived from Kolkata at the craft market, tells that she is a silk artisan by profession and makes handmade sarees in Hooghly district of West Bengal. This traditional work has been done in his family for many generations, but for the last six years he has started his own independent work. Especially after coming to her in-laws’ house, she got training for all these works.

Durga Rani Das tells that this time she has brought Assam Batik, Handmade Batik, Assam Silk, Tant Silk, Dhakai Jamdani, Kantha Stitch Saree and Shantipuri Saree to the craft market of Hazaribagh. All these sarees are completely made by hand and it takes many days of hard work to prepare them. There are some special sarees which are ready after passing through the hands of eight to ten artisans. There are some sarees whose weight is less than 100 grams.

He further said that hand embroidery and traditional craftsmanship is done on these sarees, which requires a lot of time and patience. This is the reason why every saree has a unique identity in itself and looks completely different from machine made sarees. Regarding the price, Durga Rani Das says that her products are within the reach of common people. Sarees ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 4000 are available with them. The price of sarees made of tant silk starts from Rs 800. The most expensive saree is around Rs 4000, in which special Batik craft has been done on Chanderi saree.
